What Can a Computer Do

What can a computer do? This is the question that I keep asking myself when there's a task that's need to be done, and I hear it most from my none techie fellows. Since nowadays, living in the age where more and more people have computing devices especially mobile devices.

Most people will tell you that a computer can:

  • Play music and videos
  • Help communicate with emails, messages and even calls
  • Go to the internet and Social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter
  • Open study content and do work
  • so on, and so forth

BUT, according to my knowledge, a computer is a very very dumb machine which can only do one thing, Add.Yes, all that a computer can do is too add, and not complex numbers, it can only add '0's and '1's. The brain of a computer is the processor and there is no other function that exists for a computer processor other than the addition of binary numbers, which are  '0's and '1's

Now, to get the subtraction, squaring, multiplication, division - ALL other mathematical functions the computer adds 1's and 0's in creative ways (utilizing the Most Significant Bit and the Least Significant Bit). In theory, computers can do any "computation" which is a fancy way of saying they can take numerical input, perform mathematical operations on them, and then return numerical output. Of course, people don't like numerical input and output, so fancy ways were invented to encode things like text and pictures into numbers, so we can have our computers do stuff like spell check and send things over the internet.

So to answer the question correctly, I would say, the computer can only do one thing, it can ADD!
